A World in Music
16 May 2013

As we're having a considerable amount of froggies invited to this week's event, here's a special one.

The Rule: Let's make a musical world tour! This week, France (French people won't have to travel too much). Log in Ohm Studio Friday between 8PM and 2AM (GMT!) and pick one of the following projects:

NOTE: listening to the examples provided is highly recommended. Not only for the event, but because that's all good stuff.

  • World in Music (France): à la Gainsbourg
[dandy pop] Do a project in the style (but not a cover) of Serge Gainsbourg (get inspired: 1 2 3)

  • World in Music (France): à la Rita Mitsouko
[cabaret funk] Do a project in the style (but not a cover) of les Rita Mitsouko (get inspired: 1 2 3)

  • World in Music (France): à la Daft Punk
[electro] Do a project using some samples or in the style of Daft Punk (get inspired: 1 2 3)

  • World in Music (France): à la IAM

  • World in Music (France): à la Noir Désir
[punk rock] Do a project in the style (but not a cover) of Noir Désir (get inspired: 1 2 3)

You can also suggest other French artists as a source of inspiration, of course.

BONUS TRACK

  • World in Music (France): sing in French!
Only if the singer don't speak French, obviously. (exemple: Suprème - it's good fun to listen, especially for a French :-)

Rev. 73133 released
13 May 2013
  • New: Exclusive Arm Record, when activated on a Track, allows you to automatically unarm Record all the other Tracks.

  • New: Freeze works differently, more like other DAWs.
    1. Click on the snowball to freeze the Rack a first time.

Now the icon is blue (click again to turn the freeze off).

    2. A sync button must have appeared on its right. Click to update the audio content.

  • Improvement: Tempo is more precisely displayed.

  • Improvement: Reactivating a frozen Rack during playback shouldn't generate crackling anymore.
  • Improvement: The audio engine should use 15% to 30% less CPU.
  • Improvement: Plugins load faster when opening the project, up to 40% faster.
  • Improvement: Several Audio Track Plugins can now use the same Audio Input at once.
  • Improvement: Creating a New Audio Track will choose Audio Input #1 instead of <none>.
  • Fix: When opening projects, freeze could sometimes be heard whereas it was deactivated.
  • Fix: When cut via resize or split, Audio Patterns could sometimes be heard at a slightly different time than the moment their waveforms were supposed to play.
  • Fix: When the output of a Rack was connected to its own input, the project would crash during an audio export.
  • Fix: Sometimes, Bounce to new audio track (Time Range: project) would only bounce the first beat of the Rack.
  • Fix: Sometimes, the user interface would stop responding as soon as the waveforms of some Audio Patterns displayed.
  • Fix: Tempo Points were not located at their actual position, but a few pixels rightward.
  • Fix: When a Rack was frozen and had a Send Post Fader, the signal was sometimes doubled.
  • Fix: Undo would empty selection.
  • Fix: In some projects with time signature changes, the adaptive Snap mode would not follow the grid when editing with the mouse.
  • Fix: In Arrange mode, the Pencil tool would not take Snap into account.
  • Fix: Ignore Snap (holding cmd on Mac / ctrl on PC during a mouse drag) would not work when moving the Playhead, the Loop or during a drag'n'drop from the Finder / Explorer.
  • Fix: Double Full Screen on Windows would split Dashboard between both screens.

And for the most adventurous:

  • BPM raise from where you want to where you can, you fool! (like in here)
So Many BPM!  (as much as you can eat III)

Projects will be initiated friday from 8PM to 2AM - that's also when there will be some animators on the chan (Red_Force and/or Jamie57lp).
You'll be able to join what you want via the public tab or ask them (or regulars) on the chan if you feel you could use some help. Past that point, the event you'll still be able to join but you'll have to rely on the people here. Projects can be turned private at anytime by people involved in, and new public projects respecting the theme can be added at any time by any people interested. Just invite as owner that Red_Force dude so he can keep track of it.

Beginner welcomed (download here, setup audio and learn the basics here)!

One Key
3 May 2013

The Rule: Participate in projects that have to use 3 specific keys (C,E & G#). You'll be able to join one or many of those projects via the public tab with titles starting with "One Key|C E G#".

Important! We now have Ohmiquette & THE LAW. Please read it as enforcing it may now result in moderation.

As always beginners are welcomed (download here, setup audio and learn the basics here). I'll be available for every "education" you may want on ohmstudio, from beginner to expert. Note that there may be a bit more french than usual running in the chan, as some travel companion of Crimson and Orange to the Musik Messe should visit us.

News from the office
28 April 2013

Hi everyone,

As you have probably noted, no new version came in about 3 months. It's definitely time to keep you updated about our situation and Ohm Studio's future.

Despite this void, we haven't stopped working since the last build. Instead, we have started to work on the very basis of the software to push it to a higher level.

In February, we built a new server which works almost flawlessly - except when our host Amazon Web Services performs badly. Since then, we've been working on a completely new 64-bit audio engine so that we can add new features and improve the product efficiently in the long run. Some long requested additions could never be implemented without this.

Now, here is a list of features we plan to add as soon as the new audio engine is done:

  • Loop record
  • Punch in/out
  • Track comping
  • Overdub
  • Input quantize
  • Improved automation
  • Improved time stretch
  • Better ASIO management
  • Higher global performance
  • Faster plugin scan
  • 32/64-bit compatibility for plugins
  • MIDI routing & improved audio routing
  • Sample/clip playback independently of sequence
  • Multi-project management

Of course, everything will not be added at once but the time required for each one will be greatly reduced once the new audio engine is operational. We can already say that this audio engine yields good results and allows us to solve many bugs. However, you will have to wait a few more months. Next builds will probably not include this major change, but rather bring small fixes.

On the web side, we are currently preparing the end of beta, which includes the separation of free and premium users. Once it's done, we will ask you to vote for what you would like us to work on among adverts ("I need a guitarist!"), better search options, more user/project options available in the Ohm Studio app, better forum.

Before we conclude, we would like to thank everybody who supports this project. Your love and the wonderful music you make with our tool give us energy and confidence.
