Nicks Tricks #1: Midi Out
16 September 2012

Note: Cohmmunity post! I noticed on the forum that Nick had a lot of interesting things to share with everyone so I asked him if he would like to write it proper in a column. He kindly accepted, so here it is! Hopefully there will be more if you guys like it. - Red

A light hearted way
to work around a “?”

As you may have found out OHM_studio now has midi out for internal devices but not for external ones.
THE_FORCE have informed me that it is on the “to do” list along with the ”coffee on demand” and the “walk the dog for me please” plugins.
To make sure the “walk the dog for me please” plug in gets a higher priority I have found a way to get midi out of OHM_studio and into mass of hardware filling up my tiny studio.

All you need is ...

IPH midiOut

And it's free

(B.T.W There is a little magic button in the bottom right of the screen which for those of you with a conscience, money or both)

Click on the link and download which version you require.
Once the download is complete you need to open the zip file and extract the midiOut.dll to the map/folder you use for your VST's

Restart OHM_studio

And you can now use midi Out just like any other instrument plug in, just drag and drop to create a new track.

Click on E to select which midi output device you wish to use.

Now select which out put channel you want and that's it!

TIP: Don't forget to set the audio volume of this MIDI track to 0 or you might think the dog is starting to fart in time with the metronome.

You should now be able to send MIDI tracks out of OHM_studio via your midi I/O into your much loved external Hardware which you probably had to sell your sole to the devil to buy in the first place.

NOTE.
If your playback device is the same as your recording device it maybe very wise to switch off the midi Out during recording to prevent a feedback back loop. Although this will probably not damage your equipment it does sound like four 3 year old children trying to play Bohemian Rhapsody and it will damage your desire to record, so you will end up walking the dog yourself for new inspiration.

Good luck

Nick

Let's Dance!
14 September 2012

Dance! Dance! But dance on what? Well, you pick, I don't care: I wanna dance, that's all. Rockabilly, punk, hardcore techno or disco or anything else as long as I can forget about myself in the frenzy of the night.

Now as ever this is collab, so you'll do that with random friend from the internet (but you can invite you real friends too...).

If you can't be there, don't hesitate to prepare something in a project and invite me in, I'll include it in the sessions (thx to drumaholic for the idea, Australia being so far away he actually had to come up with it).

So, how to be a part of it?

Install Ohm Studio if not done yet, set up audio, MIDI & VST path at your convenience, check the basics, then connect this Saturday between 3 and 9 PM GMT (beware of the summer time offset!). Find "Red_Force" in the chat list and send me this code phrase "shake that booty Red" (or scream it on the channel for maximum fun). Despite possible latency, I will quickly introduce you to a new project with other people who will all share your goal to throw the princess into a pit and laugh madly.

Songs from the latest event (and their heirs) can be heard using the search box top right (Magnohm P.I. #1 to 3) . A timelapse of a collab can be watched here, or, if you're really intrigued, there's always this longer video

See you on Saturday in the nightclub! Free pass for the girls. Oh, and the boys. And even you, Nick!

Magnohm P.I.
7 September 2012

This Saturday we'll try to make the main theme of a brand new TV show I am planning to do. This is the story of Tohmas Magnohm, a private investigator on a paradise island with his good friends Perry and Nick. What? Don't look at me. This is absolutely not related to Magnum PI. This is new, this is special. How? Up to you to find it. Saturday is your unique opportunity to do this credit song the way you want it. It can be a song, it can be instrumental, it can be noire or disco, but it must be 2'30" long, no more no less. And as every Saturday, this will be a collab, of course.

So, how to be a part of it?

Install Ohm Studio if not done yet, set up audio, MIDI & VST path at your convenience, check the basics, then connect this Saturday between 3 and 9 PM GMT (beware of the summer time offset!). Find "Red_Force" in the chat list and send me this code phrase "you make really dumb events" (or scream it on the channel for maximum fun). Despite possible latency, I will quickly introduce you to a new project with other people who will all share your goal to throw the princess into a pit and laugh madly.

See you on Saturday! Bring your Hawaiian shirt.

  • Private Tracks: Plugins can now host Private Tracks. These are associated to one member: in other words, other members can neither see nor listen to them as well as the Patterns they carry.

Other members can see the existence of at least 1 Private Track via orange shades on the Plugin Header.

A Rack must contain at least 1 Public Track.

  • Bug fix: Mac users can now safely place your cache folder on another drive than the system's.

  • New command added: use the mouse scroll wheel in the Timeline to zoom in/out horizontally.

  • New keyboard shortcut added: Alt  +  L  to zoom into the looped section (   +  L  on Mac).

Our darkest time...
31 August 2012

Collab strikes back! And of course you know what it means: this is the darkest episode (and hopefully the best one).

But wait, I am new here, what's a collab? Here is a 2 minute timelapse of the last one:

So, how to be a part of it?

Install Ohm Studio if not done yet, set up audio, MIDI & VST path at your convenience, check the basics, then connect this Saturday between 3 and 9 PM GMT (beware of the summer time offset!). Find "Red_Force" in the chat list and send me this code phrase "I am your father" (or scream it on the channel for maximum fun). Despite some possible latency, I will quickly introduce you to a new project with other people who will all share your goal to throw the princess in a pitt and laugh madly.

Once in the rule is simple: this is another "mood based" event. So do something "dark". Employ any means you see fit, your vsts, built-in FX / instruments, recording your voice, sample of a politician, even ukulele.

Songs from the latest event (and their heirs) can be heard here. See you on Saturday!
